The Youth Outreach Program at the Downtown Activity Center provides comprehensive youth support and outreach services to the communities of Salmon Arm, Sorrento, Sicamous, and Enderby. The program targets youth that are on Independent or semi-independent living and range in age from 15-19 years old.
Funding is provided through the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and referrals come directly from the Integrated Youth Team.
The program provides services which are consistent with the needs of the youth served, through direct interaction using “hands on” approach to teach and model necessary skills to live independently with success. The Program is designed to support and assist youth to develop skills required to meet their financial, residential, educational, social, and health needs. In this, we facilitate connections with adequate health care, including mental health and addictions services. We provide an orientation to the many community resources available, as well as improved linkages with people in the community.
With the support of the Youth Outreach Worker, youth referred to this program by a MCFD Social Worker, will experience:
- Support in their journey to optimize health and well being, to increase self awareness, to increase self-reliance, and to reduce involvement in high-risk or illegal activities.
- Active participation in identifying problem areas and in developing realistic short and long-term planning.
- Support in re-establishing healthy relationships within the family and other social connections.
- Skilled intervention and transition support services to identified “at risk” youth, and supports them towards leading healthier & safer lifestyles.
